Understanding Credit & debit cards

Debit and credit cards draw on different financial arrangements. Issuer policies and the merchant’s acceptance rules can matter more than the logo displayed on a comparison page.

What to check on the payment screen

Understand how the transaction will be classified and what fees could apply. Never use borrowed funds to chase gambling losses.

Deposits and withdrawals are different

A card-funded payment can involve an authorisation before a final posted charge. Consult the issuer's description of those states and distinguish them from a merchant balance. The credit or debit label does not by itself explain acceptance, conversion or refund handling.

Keep a clear record

For an unfamiliar card entry, retain the merchant descriptor, date and posted amount, then use the issuer's official assistance process. A full card number or one-time authentication code should not be included in an ordinary message to website support.
